What it’s Like to Get Started With Toggl Track
Signing up for Toggl Track was quick and painless. I had the option to use email, Google, or Apple ID, and since there’s a free plan, I didn’t have to enter any payment details.
It was refreshing not to hit a paywall before even testing the tool.
Onboarding Experience
Right after logging in, Toggl Track walked me through the setup process.
A few setup questions popped up to help me define a project, which was helpful for getting organized from the start. I was asked to name a project and even link it to a calendar (e.g., Google Calendar).
There were talk balloons pointing to different buttons that guided me through key actions like creating a project, starting a timer, and generating reports.
While there wasn’t a step-by-step interactive walkthrough, these pop-ups made it easy to figure out what to do next.

Once inside, the first thing I saw was the calendar and the start/stop button for the Toggl time tracker. Everything I needed — analytics, reports, invoices, and project settings — was listed on the left sidebar. The settings menu is reasonably grouped.
A folder icon indicating a project, task, or client is visibly placed close to the time tracker button, so I could choose the project, client, or specific task to work on. That same icon also allowed me to create new projects or invite new members (when creating a new project).
Other useful icons very close to the time tracker button are the tag icon and dollar icon. This first one allowed me to tag what I’m working on for later reference, and the dollar sign makes it easy to mark if what I’m currently doing is billable or not. Yes, you can do job costing based on work hours.
Of course, the setup I mentioned for new projects, tags, and bills can also be done through the left-side menu. There, you can also go to projects, schedule tasks, assign clients, set rates per hour for billing, and, of course, generate reports and create invoices.
First-Time User Experience
At first glance, the interface looked clean and simple, but I did run into a few challenges. Since I was starting fresh, there wasn’t any data yet, which made certain features — like charts and reports — a bit difficult to set up or customize.
For example, I tried checking out the analytics page, but without any tracked time, I couldn’t really use any analytics features. However, after I tracked my time and some members’ time, creating charts became very easy.
Another small hurdle was grouping data when setting up charts or tables in analytics. It wasn’t easy figuring out how the analytics would show the time each member spent on each project.
Nevertheless, the filter buttons above the charts are quite helpful in narrowing down data per client, per project, per tag, etc.
For end users, Toggle Tracker is indeed very easy to use. They can start tracking time as soon as they sign up. But if I were managing a team, I could see how setting up multiple projects and roles might take a bit more effort. You can track jobs or tasks, but you can’t really track locations, which limits the use case of this app. It might not work well with fieldwork-heavy teams.

Using Toggl Track’s web app was pretty simple. The layout is clean, and everything I need — time tracking, reports, projects, and settings — is listed in a sidebar on the left.
The timer is always there, so I can start or stop tracking time without hunting for it. The dashboard gives a quick overview of total hours, billable time, and earnings, which made it easy to see where my time was going.

Getting around the app was easy. The sidebar has all the main sections, and clicking on one opens more options without cluttering the screen.
